Improving your work-life balance has a lot to do with how productive you are at work and how much time you spend in the office during the week. But, a lot of professionals forget the other side of the equation. If you want to improve your work-life balance, you need to optimize your weekends. Here are 3 reasons why you should optimize your weekends.

1. Recharge Your Batteries: When you spend your weekends disconnected from work you have the opportunity to recharge your batteries. That way, when Monday rolls around again (as it always does), you’re ready to put your head down and focus throughout the week. Recharging your batteries is essential if you want to be productive at work.

2. Pursue Passion Projects: Whether you’re working on a side business or building relevant skills for your current job that will eventually earn you a promotion, optimizing your weekend often involves making time to pursue passion projects. This will improve your performance at work or get you where you want to be in your career.

3. Prevent Burnout: The very real threat of burnout is always looming for those who don’t prioritize their work-life balance. Unfortunately, most modern professionals fall into that category. If you want to prevent burnout, one of the most important things you can do on a weekly basis is optimize your weekends.

1. Lump Errands and Other Productive Tasks Together: There will always be chores that need to get done, errands that need to be run, and other small productive tasks that you simply don’t have the time or brain power for after work. In order to optimize your weekends, you need to lump these tasks all together so they don’t end up encroaching on all of your free time. Pick one day or one time block during your weekend and knock out everything you need to do. Then be done with it and focus on your rest, relaxation, and relationship building,

2. Explore a New Activity, Place, or Event: Did you know that following the same routine every weekend can actually make your weekends fly by faster? It’s true! If you’re not exploring a new activity, place, or event on your weekends they’ll feel like they zipped by come Monday morning and you’ll have very little recollection of the weekend at all. This is bad news when it comes to work-life balance because, if you don’t have solidified memories of your time off, it can sometimes feel like you had no time off at all. Try to break your routines and do at least one novel thing per weekend so they’ll feel like they’re longer and so you can avoid burnout.

3. Prioritize Personal Relationships: The weekends are a perfect time to let your professional network and coworkers take a backseat to prioritize your personal relationships. If you want to optimize your weekends and improve your work-life balance, spending time with friends, family, and other loved ones is a great option.

Spending your time off following the same routines and not giving much thought to what you’re doing is the norm. But, if you really want to improve your work-life balance, you can’t ignore the life side of the equation. Start optimizing your weekends and you’ll improve your work-life balance!
