5 Ways to Know if You’re on the Right Career Path

Failures and triumphs and smaller moments in between may have you reflecting on the big picture of your career. Ideally, you’d have a fulfilling, exciting, challenging job that ticks all of your boxes but if you’re junior or mid-level, you may not have the exact job you want just yet. How can you know if you’re on the right career path? Ask yourself these 5 questions.

1. Are you challenged regularly? You don’t want to feel like you’re in over your head completely but the best career paths challenge us and motivate us to push ourselves. If you’re never challenged by the work you’re doing, your skills, knowledge, and motivation will stagnate and lead to a lackluster career. But, if you’re challenged on a regular basis, you can rise to the occasion, stay engaged, and continue to learn and grow throughout your working life.

2. Is it ultimately not about the money? If you won the lottery would you quit your job without any notice and never reflect fondly on your career? Would you stop using the talents and skills required for your job completely? Ultimately, you want your career to not be completely about the money. Sure, it’s a little about the money but if you dig beyond the surface level you can figure out if your current career path is one that interests you in some way beyond the money. If money is your sole motivator, this may not be the right career for you.

3. Do people see you as a square peg in a round hole? It’s not always important to factor in other people’s opinions but it can be helpful if you’re trying to figure out if you’re on the right track in your career. Are you playing to strengths that others have identified or do your coworkers and bosses think you’re kind of like a square peg in a round hole? Pursuing the strengths and talents others see and point out in you can help you have a successful, fulfilling career.

4. What would your childhood self think? Okay, so we didn’t all turn into astronauts and professional basketball players and firefighters like our childhood selves might have wanted. However, there’s still a way to factor in what your childhood self would think of your career path. Maybe you work in a job where you earn a lot of money so you can be one of the first guests in a space hotel once those exist or maybe you loved riding your bike as a kid and now you get to bike to and from work every day. If some part of your childhood self would be happy in your current career, you’re probably on the right path.

5. Does it cover multiple areas of interest and passion? As humans, we have multi-faceted personalities and often have a lot of areas of interest or several passions we want to pursue. If you’re on the right career path, your job will currently or will soon be able to cover more than one of your passions and areas of interest. For example, you’re passionate about technology and interested in helping your community, so you develop websites and web applications for a great non-profit. A career that allows as many of your interests and passions to overlap on the job will definitely be the right path for you.

Ask yourself these 5 questions if you want to figure out whether or not you’re on the right career path. Once you do, you can decide if you need to start a job search or if you’re happy where you’re at for the moment.
