How to Pick the Perfect Suit Jacket For Your Next Interview or Client Meeting

By Chelsea Babin

Most jobs, particularly in the IT industry, no longer require employees to wear suit jackets on a regular basis. However, when you’re ready to get a little more business formal for an interview, client meeting, or other important career event you may be a little confused about how to pick out the perfect suit jacket. Follow these 4 simple steps and that process will be easier than you’d ever imagined!

1. Shoulder Seams: To get the perfect fit in the shoulders a suit jacket’s seams should fall squarely on your shoulder’s natural edge.

2. Hem: For the best possible fit the hem of your suit jacket should land at the base (or bottom) of your front pockets.

3. Cuffs: End of your sleeves look best when they land right at your wrist bone and leave a quarter to half an inch of space for your shirt cuff.

4. Two Button Two Finger Rule: When you’re wearing a two button suit jacket and the top button is fastened there should be enough room for two horizontal fingers worth of space between your chest and the jacket.

Making a great impression often relies on the fit of your suit jacket. Next time you’re buying a new one or getting yours tailored before an important interview or client meeting use these 4 simple rules to get the best fit possible!
